Wellness Tips to Prevent Heart Disease
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America, taking more lives than cancer and diabetes combined. As weight gain is one of the major contributing factors for heart disease, our health and wellness experts share their tips for prevention:

1. Reduce your sugar intake
New Dietary Guidelines based on the latest research revealed that a diet with a lot of added sugar increases risk for Chronic Heart Disease (CHD) due to the fact it spikes insulin levels that cause inflammation in the arterial walls.  Excessive sugar is also associated with weight gain and obesity and that increases risk factors for CHD.

According to Director of Nutrition Paulette Lambert, R.D., CDE, the recommended level of daily sugar intake should be 20-25 grams of added sugar for men and 15-18 grams for women.

2. Keep moving
Thirty minutes of daily cardiovascular exercise at a moderate intensity level can greatly reduce your risk of CHD. This can be anything that your body can safely handle, perfomed in a rhythmical and continuous manner, like walking, hiking, biking or swimming.

Exercise specialist Scott Silviera recommends breaking your thirty minute workout into smaller, ten-minute intervals to get started.

3. It’s never too late, and it’s never too early
According to our partners at Dole Nutrition, new research reveals that heart disease and diabetes begin at a very early age. Childhood obesity is a major cause, therefore it’s critical to start kids on the path to healthy eating habits early on. On the other end, the effects of unhealthy diet and lifestyle are cumulative yet also highly responsive to change. With the right choices, many adverse heart-healthy conditions can be halted and potentially reversed.

New Year, New You

New year running training

The new year gives us the chance to wipe the slate clean and start fresh, whether that means setting and keeping goals or forming healthier lifestyle habits.

With a variety of health and lifestyle services available, commit to making positive change with one of our award-winning wellness programs at Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village.

Ilana Kukoff, director of the Life Balance programs at the Hotel, shares helpful tips for creating personal, sustainable change that’s guaranteed to set you up for success.

Step One: Learn how to create sustainable changes.

1. Make a list of things that you like and dislike about yourself.
2. Take all the things you like about yourself and pick the top five. Remind yourself of those five things each and every day.
3. You can change the things on your dislike list by setting a realistic deadline for change; begin by making a list of what it takes to change those things and cross each one off as you complete them.

Step Two: Take action to reach your goal.

Our team of wellness experts offer recommendations for programs and services to address some of the most common New Year’s resolutions and goals:

Quit smoking - Try a session of Clinical MeditationThe clinical use of hypnotic techniques that reinforce positive and therapeutic subconscious signals to achieve deep relaxation, change old habits and promote healthy behaviors. (50 minutes $175; 80 minutes $260)

Eat healthier - Experience our results-driven nutrition program in your own home with a copy of The Wellness Kitchen Cookbook. Learn how to prepare simple, nutritious recipes for your whole family and plan out your meals for the week ahead. ($24.99)

Get in Shape Before you hit the gym, make sure you know your numbers first- the BOD POD body composition analysis measures the quality of a one’s weight or percentage of body fat, and includes a mini-consultation with a fitness expert to review results. If your current exercise regimen isn’t cutting it, step up your fitness goals with a Personal Training Session (Bod Pod – $95; Personal Training – 50 minutes $150, package of 12 personal training sessions $1590)

Train for a marathon - The Performance Evaluation Package features a combination of fitness assessments —including Body Composition (BOD POD), Metabolic Tests (VO2 and RMR), and a Posture and Movement Assessment—which help to provide you with valuable data in preparation for any kind of training, whether for a half or full marathon, triathlon or Iron Man. Results are reviewed in a one-on-one consultation with a fitness expert and individualized recommendations are made. For a post-race recovery, our Detox Body Wrap utilizes heat therapy to soothe aches and alleviate pains associated with athletic injury, strains and sprains. (Performance Evaluation Package – $550; Detox Body Wrap – 50-minutes $185, 80-minutes $285)

Stress less - Stress is a major contributing factor when it comes to preventive and chronic illness. Research has shown that spending 10 minutes a day meditating can help to balance your stress levels and help you maintain a happier, healthier lifestyle. Experience the ultimate mind and body connection with a session in our Somadome Meditation Pod at The Spa. (20 minutes, from $45-60)
